Kickstarting my career at Bevic

Graduating amidst a global pandemic wasn’t how I planned to end my final year at university. The class of 2020. The first cohort to have no cap and gown, no celebration just an online farewell, and a certificate received in the post.

However, I now faced the same challenge of the 2008 graduates of navigating the job market in a looming recession. After countless applications for entry-level jobs, requiring a minimum of 2 years experience, (how does that work?). I came across the Kickstart scheme. A scheme which would not only offer me employment but a programme to develop my practical skillset within the area I love, marketing and communications! It was a no-brainer. An application, video interview, and marketing task later, Bevic became my new home for the next 6 months!

Coming to the end of my first month here at Bevic I have been lucky enough to work on some really exciting client projects from international launch plans, online events, celebrity ambassadors, and charity support. I really believe taking the first steps of my marketing journey at an agency, rather than an individual business, has been the best possible start to my career. Working with a range of businesses, not one from the same sector, and covering the entire marketing mix, has thrown me straight in at the deep end, but been a great challenge. Marketing is multi-faceted. It runs in so many different channels and that is what I love about it, especially in this role, as no day is the same.

Living in the new digital age Covid has forced upon us, the majority of my Bevic time has been spent working remotely over Zoom. Although it is amazing that we can now connect with colleagues over video, it can sometimes feel slightly lonely at home with no one to talk to. It’s ironic, we are more connected than ever, but also feel more isolated than before. I have missed face-to-face interaction when working, and the opportunity to have a good old gossip. So, I have really enjoyed the opportunity of working at the Assembly co-working space in Bradford, every other Tuesday and bouncing ideas of each other in person.

My favourite aspect of the role so far has to be social content creation. Spending most of my spare time on Instagram and Tiktok, it has been amazing to turn my passion into a career. As a big people person, being able to engage with your audience directly and see the effect your work has in real-time is a great feeling. However, it has also been great to focus on the other avenues of marketing, working on tasks including:

  • curating blog posts

  • conducting competitor analyses and market research

  • SEO

Coming straight from university, my experience of many aspects of marketing has been very theory-based. Therefore I’m eager to develop my practical skillset in these areas, particularly within PR. This is an area I currently have little experience in, but since being at Bevic, have already started creating media lists for press releases for a number of client campaigns and events.

After just over one month at Bevic my knowledge of the real world of marketing and communication has already grown so much. I can’t wait to progress and see what the next 5 months have in store.
